Most of this year Hope’s Journey has been at a stand still.  Several factors are involved.  The result is that change is in the air.  The biggest change will be that Hope’s Journey Int’l is starting the process of becoming it’s own non-profit organization.  While Hope’s Journey and Solid Rock Foundation Ministries both have a heart to see youth and families restored to God the Father’s heart, we are different enough in the communities that we want to serve and impact that we have been counseled to separate into two entities.

We have heard from the State of Colorado, Department of Health and Human Services, and basically they don’t know what to classify us as.  This is causing us to brainstorm about how we can offer services to burn-injured and disabled children without having to involve Medicare and Medicaid.

The contract on the property that we were pursuing in Ouray expired last fall.  We have been waiting on the County to determine the changes they have stated they will make to the zoning code.  We have not thought it wise to make such a huge investment in a property unless county and state things are in order.  We have just heard this week that the property is up for auction on June 19th, therefore this property will no longer be a consideration for Hope’s Journey.

Although these changes are huge and a lot to wrap the mind around, I am encouraged that God is in control and all these things are working together to form the vision that is on God’s heart, in His timing.  I am stepping away from SRFM to focus full-time on Hope’s Journey.  This involves assembling a board of directors, as well as an advisory board, and establishing a tax-exempt charitable organization, finding ways to gain experience and contacts in the burn community, being educated in public-speaking and fundraising, reforming our current plan to include phases that would allow us to assist burn-injured children sooner than later with achievable fundraising goals, and communicating effectively with all of those that have an interest in the progress of Hope’s Journey Int’l.

It is impossible to estimate when we will be able to offer our services.  My desire is that we would see considerable progress in the next year.  Thank you all for your friendship, encouragement, and understanding.

I’m aware that many of you have been wondering as to the progress of Hope’s Journey.  The best description for what’s been going on for the past 3 months is hibernation.  We haven’t fallen off the face of the earth, nor has the vision of Hope’s Journey died.  We’ve really been in a waiting mode.  In the meantime, the holidays have come and gone, there have been some family dramas that have needed my attention, and I have taken on teaching an art class in a local school, so life has been far from boring.

Spring is coming and Hope’s Journey is waking from a bit of a sleep.  In November, David and I sat in on a Ouray County Commissioners planning meeting.  In that meeting the definition of “Assisted Living Residence” was discussed.  The final conclusion was that the county attorney would do some research and bring them back a framework to work from in order to create an agreeable change in the land use code.  The commissioners declared that they would keep Hope’s Journey and its needs in mind, but that their focus is more on the needs of  the senior population in the county.  It sounded as though the county attorney would bring her research to them around the end of January.

If we are to move forward in Ouray County then we need to understand the parameters that the county is willing to work within.  January and February have come and gone and we have still heard nothing as to the progress of the code changes.  My delay in sending out a update has mostly been because I’ve not had much to update you on.

We did have a board meeting to discuss our next steps.  We have decided to do some further research and make some needed connections with the State of Colorado, since the State is who will most likely be licensing and certifying Hope’s Journey.  I will also be making some changes to the website and working on expanding my connections in the medical community.

Please keep praying.  This is uncharted territory for me, and while some days I find it intimidating and challenging, I’m determined to keep moving forward.  I would love to hear your thoughts and ideas if you have any suggestions.

Please keep this date in mind.  It is our next hurdle to clear with the Ouray County.  We are on the agenda for the Ouray Board of County Commissioners meeting at 1:30pm.  Here they will either accept, deny, or table our request for a change to the zoning code.  We have requested that they add the term and definition “Assisted Living Residence” to their zoning code.  Once that change is made we can make the next step and apply for our special use permit.

Our board of directors has decided to move forward with capital fundraising.  We will be meeting soon to pull together a strategy for this endeavor.  Most of you know that the purchase price of the facility we are under contract for is $1,175,000.00.  We would like to raise enough to not only cover the purchase price, but also any necessary improvements and start up costs.  Whatever funds we are able to raise ultimately decreases the cost to the clients families.  Our goal is to help our clients to overcome their injuries.  We don’t want to strain them financially.

Last Monday I returned from Raleigh, NC, where my sister Roseanna and I attended the annual World Burn Congress.  We had an informational booth and shared the vision of Hope’s Journey Int’l with those attending.  We were very encouraged by our efforts.  Every time that I began to wonder if we were premature in being there, sharing a vision of a place that isn’t ours yet, someone would come by, hear our blurb, and respond with excitement, validating that Hope’s Journey will help fill a true need.  We had many people sign up to receive updates as well as offer their help and insights into this project.  To all of our new friends, thank you. I look forward to getting to know you and learning from your experiences as we reach out and offer hope to others marked by trauma.

Please Pray!

The bank has just informed us that we need additional guarantors before they can approve the loan.

This has caused us to question whether we’re to find additional people that would act as guarantors.  This would enable us to secure the bank loan for the purchase price of the facility.

Our other option would be to begin capital fundraising at this time. This would either reduce the loan amount or eliminate the need for a bank loan entirely.

We would appreciate your prayers and any input you may have.  Please contact us if you are able to help in any way.

We had the meeting with the Joint Planning Board for the town of Ridgway and Ouray County on September 16 and requested they amend the zoning regulations to allow for “Assisted Living Residences”.  It was an intense meeting with strong emotions expressed by residents on both sides of the issue, but in the end, the amendment was approved with a few minor changes recommended and will now be passed onto the Ouray County Commissioners for their approval before the zoning code is changed.

Once this process is completed, it will not only open one of the doors needed for us to be able to serve burn-injured children in Ouray County, but the elderly that love that county as their home might now also have an option to see someone open an assisted living home to serve their needs! The actual paperwork for the zoning amendment should take another month to be processed.

We are now busy establishing a presence in Ridgway, opening a PO Box and creating business materials necessary to further our vision. Our next step will be to apply for a “Special Use Permit” and to request that the State approve and license Hope’s Journey Int’l under the necessary qualifications.

Our excitement and anticipation builds as each hurdle is passed.  We greatly appreciate your prayers and support as our expectations are consistently surpassed!

It seems about time to update you as to the progress of Hope’s Journey. A lot has been going on in the last couple of months.

I just returned from our annual missions trip with our youth group (Audience of One). We spent five weeks on the East Coast in Monroe, NC; Taylors and Greenville, SC; Elon, NC; Raleigh, NC; Spotsylvania, VA; and Washington D.C. We had an incredible time praying for and ministering in our own nation. I met several burn survivors in our travels and made many relevant connections. I’m excited to see the outcome of these encounters.

We are still under contract for the property located in Ridgway, CO. We’ve been doing research, contacting lawyers, having multiple board meetings, working on our loan approval, and making connections. On July 30, we applied to Ouray County Land Use Department for a zoning amendment. We are proposing that the county add an allowance for “Residential Assisted Living” into their code as a special use so that organizations such as Hope’s Journey can legally operate in Ouray County. Our application has been accepted. We are now waiting for a meeting along with approval from the county commissioners, which should happen around September 15th. In the event that this zoning amendment is accepted, we will then have to apply for a “Special Use Permit” and undergo local and state inspections as well as public meetings before our permit is granted.

Our contract is dependent on our ability to get approval from the county, all of which takes time and leaves us a little uncertain as to when we will be able to take possession of this property.

Needless to say, the last two to three months have been busier than ever. God’s grace has been more than sufficient. My directors, board members, real estate agent, friends, and family have all pitched in and helped. This project is huge, but each day I’m more and more convinced that Hope’s Journey is a real need for those that are recovering from life-changing traumas.

In October, I will be attending the annual World Burn Congress held in Raleigh, NC. I look forward to sharing the vision of Hope’s Journey to other burn survivors and burn care workers that meet at these conventions from all over the world.

Our short-term fundraising needs continue to be great. We have been encouraged by God’s provision through your giving. In the near future, we need to see our “in earnest” payment completely funded as well as our basic start-up costs covered. We also need to pay for the costs associated with our presence at the burn conference and the materials needed to promote Hope’s Journey, Int’l.

If you would like to contribute to these funds, please make checks payable to Solid Rock Foundation Ministries and attach a note specifying your gift to Hope’s Journey, Intl. Checks can be mailed to P.O. Box 2149, Montrose, CO 81402. Alternatively, you may make a donation using the donate link found here.

I would like to thank all of you for your continued prayers, encouragement, and financial contributions as we jump into these founding stages of Hope’s Journey, Intl. Your input is significant, and we pray that you will be mightily blessed for all the ways that you have blessed us in this process.

On July 15, I left on outreach to the East Coast with Solid Rock Foundation Ministries. For the next month, I will be traveling with SRFM staff and youth. While on the East Coast, we will focus on learning more about God, ministering to the locals through performances, and sharing our testimonies of how Jesus has worked in our lives.

While I am away, Hope’s Journey Int’l is still progressing! We have submitted our requests for Ouray County to amend the zoning variance on the land so that we will be fully released to go about serving the children that we desire to have as future clients of Hope’s Journey Int’l.

Please continue to pray for this process, that we might build the relationships that will be a part of the community that we are going to be ministering in and that we will have wisdom in walking through each necessary step!

Isaiah 61:3

“…to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.”
